Access Point - Training and Development
As we continue with our commitment to Responsible Business Week, today we review our training and development.
At Access Point we not only count on our staff, we believe in them. We want them to do more, to reach higher and achieve their best. This is central to our business because we know that the more we ask of them and the more we support them, the more they’ll give back. To do this we offer as much support as we can to achieve their best inside and outside of work.
A full Personal Development Programme was introduced in 2014 in order to allow our team the opportunity to discuss their job satisfaction, future development and career aspirations, whilst identifying problems and developing solutions in an environment that also allows for recognition of their good performance.
Sales manager Claire was instrumental in the implementation of our PDP scheme;
“We didn’t have anything in place that was consistent in assisting employees and managers to develop skills, improve job performance and grow as an individual.
The Access Point team are always looking to strive for perfection and personally develop and the PDP was the perfect tool to sustain this. The scheme allows employees to discuss and asses their roles openly, creating action places for improvement and ascertain any training needs for their progression through the company. This improves performance and job satisfaction, therefore increasing productivity.”
In addition, all Access Point staff are offered the chance to take NVQs in their area of specialty, from Sales or Business Admin to Customer Service and even Management, because if they’re with us for one year or for ten, we want them to grow and develop and to leave us with more than they came with. As Richard Branson says, ‘Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don't!’
But just like our recycling pledge, this brings benefits to our business as well. Cutting down on waste saves us money as well as the environment; offering NVQs to staff not only brings them more qualifications and skills but it brings those skills back to the business, helping to make them even better employees and the company to develop and grow too. We strongly believe providing this funded training increases staff motivation, competence and productivity, resulting in a happier workforce that has gained recognition for their skills.
It’s our goal to employ, retain and train the best staff, which is why we also support work experience and apprenticeship schemes at Access Point. We support local colleges with their students’ work experience placements as well as giving opportunities to unemployed people registered with Jobcentre to gain some necessary work experience in an office environment. This has helped with our recruitment and increased staff morale and involvement.
Young people bring new energy to any business; they are keen to learn and keen to try out new ideas and get involved with staff’s initiatives which creates positive atmosphere in the office. With youth unemployment at a record high participating in this kind of scheme helps us to better our community, investing in our future and theirs.
It’s for this same reason that we try to invest in the future of all of our staff, whether that be the installation of an in-house gym, to offering incentives for team members to quit smoking.
At the end of the day, we try to do everything we can to make sure that everyone at Access Point knows that they’re valued from their very first day. In this day and age when everyone feels like a statistic, it has never been more important for businesses to take the lead in making sure that everyone who works for them feels connected to what they’re doing.
