Hammerson shopping centres buck the trend with 0.4% rise in sales in April

 

 Hammerson Shopping Centres Access PointApril was a tough month for Shopping Centres with the BRC reporting like-for-like sales down 0.9% for the month. However the Hammerson portfolio has bucked the trend with big boosts from Tech and Travel leading the way.

 

There was a big boost to tech with a 27.5% increase during April! The launch of the iPad Pro and the iPhone 5SE no doubt helped, with Cabot Circus, Bristol and WestQuay, Southampton customers having the biggest spending sprees.

 

With the summer holidays fast approaching there was a rush for long-haul destinations too. Customers at Union Square, Aberdeen, Silverburn, Glasgow and WestQuay, Southampton splurged on cruises and luxury breaks especially with the Maldives and Barbados topping the list.

 

Commenting on the performance, Hammerson CEO David Atkins said:

It is encouraging to see customers still treating themselves to high value items such as the latest smart technology and long haul and luxury travel. With additional highly anticipated tech launches this autumn, we expect to a similar bounce in this category later in the year, as we see a trend towards consumers prioritising big-ticket tech over wardrobe updates.
